Known for trendy cafes, boutiques and independent bookstores, Ponsonby in central Auckland is a busy place. In 2016, we constructed scaffolding for a ‘leaky building’ located amongst it all.
The four-story building was 17 meters tall. To bring it up to code, and salvage some value, the owners hired builders to re-clad its frame and replace its roof.
Like with any re-cladding project, it was necessary to protect the building from the weather while work took place. Therefore, our job was to construct scaffolding that would enable installers to apply protective low-density polyethylene (LDPE), known as shrink wrap.
Some scaffolding companies shy away from shrink-wrap jobs; scaffolds have been known to collapse due to water build up if not constructed correctly. However, this kind of work is our specialty, so we were in our element.
We built a lean-to roof structure on this job with the scaffolding running down the side of the building to allow its roof and gutters to capture water.
Because of the job’s busy location, ensuring public safety and minimising disruption to businesses were chief concerns. Therefore, before we began, we approached Auckland Transport to obtain a corridor access permit to build scaffolding, which allowed the public to walk underneath, on the footpath.
With this job, we provided the right result for the builder. Just as importantly, there was minimal disruption to the public and safety was assured.
