Auckland Airport, located at Airport Oaks South Auckland, is New Zealand’s largest airport—nearly five-and-a-half million travellers pass through every year. In 2016, we were tasked with building a scaffold for the installation of a large departures and arrivals LCD screen.
The LCD screen was installed above where passengers walk towards the departure lounge. Like any commercial business, it was important for Auckland Airport that work caused minimal disruption to passengers.
We often use low-density polyethylene (LDPE) cladding, commonly known as shrink wrap, to protect buildings under construction from the weather. For this job, though, we used shrink wrap for a different purpose: to reduce disruption to passengers by concealing the work site.
The job took two days in total. We spent one day building the scaffold, and the shrink-wrap people spent the following day fitting the shrink wrap.
As already mentioned, it was important to minimise disruption to passengers. So, for us, this meant working between the unsociable hours of 11.30 pm and 4.30 am.
Good scaffolders are good communicators. We know from experience that pretty much all builders have personal preferences when it comes to scaffolding. So, the onus was on us to talk with the builders to ensure we delivered a scaffold that met their requirements. We never leave a site until we know the builder is happy.
With this job, there were no KPIs to measure. What mattered was that we provided the right result for the builder with minimal disruption to the Airport.
Mission accomplished.
