SCAFFOLDING A BRIDGE IN MT ROSKILL

Bridge lift1

In 2017, a client in Mount Roskill, Auckland, wanted to paint his business’ building. We were tasked with constructing a platform with ladder beams to enable painters to reach a wall standing above a neighbouring building.

The process

Our solution was to build a double platform of ladder beams above the laundromat. It didn’t touch the roof, so there was no risk of damage.

To enable the painters to reach the entire wall, we then constructed two lifts (platforms) above our platform at approximately two meters apart. To enable the painters to climb to each level, we included a ladder outside each lift.

For this job, we had to apply extra bracing because an approximately 15-meter platform in combination with two additional lifts generated a lot of weight.

The challenge

The neighbouring building was a laundromat and was a couple of stories below our client’s building. The initial plan was to construct a scaffold on the laundromat’s roof. However, the owner of the laundromat objected fearing this would cause damage.

Legally, the neighbour was required to let our client do what was necessary to maintain his property. However, they produced a letter from a lawyer stating our client would have to pay in full for any damage. We had taken photos that showed the roof and guttering were in poor condition, so we decided not to tempt fate.

The result

The project worked out well. Our client was able to paint his building, and the neighbour’s roof remained unscathed. Everyone was happy.
